This Leo Carty 1992 oil painting features the Friedensthal Moravian Church and Manse, which was founded by the German Moravian brethren in the 1750’s. The area was named Estate Friedensthal, which translates to “Valley of Peace” in German. The parish house (or manse) was built in the 1830’s as both a school and dwelling quarters. The current church, built from 1852-54, can be seen in upper left corner in Carty’s rendition of this piece entitled “Scratch Band”. The sextet of musicians include the banjo, flute, conga drums, percussion, horns and drums, find a cool spot in the shade to entertain at a festival for the natives.
