Marcus Garvey (1870 – 1940) – Founder and leader of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). During the 1920’s, the Jamaican born Garvey exhorted the Black people throughout the Western hemisphere that they should look back to Africa for direction and inspiration in their struggles for freedom and self determination ], for Africa would lead the way. By the 1960’s Garvey’s prophecies had become a reality with the emergence of the free independent nations of Africa and the Caribbean whose flags are shown in Leo Carty’s oil painting.
